Recently, Warrior coach Cole participated in the podcasting Dubs Talk and received an exclusive interview with reporter Dalton Johnson.
Q: This year is the ninth season of warriors, during which they won four championships. Popovich baby is one of your mentors. More than 70 of them are still teaching. Do you have any prospects for your future teaching career?
Cole: I am can’t be taught as long as Bobo. He has been teaching for Spurs 26 years. He is a special case in this industry. I think it is usually a team that stays for several years. I think our team has performed well in the past few years, but it all depends on the coordination of warriors from top to bottom. We have great management, general manager Miles is also great, and our core players Curry, dream chasing and clay are all Hall of Fame players. For fans, this is a special era, and I enjoy being one of them.
Q: You played with Jordan in your career as a player. You met Curry in your career as a coach and James in the finals. They are all great players, what do you think is the difference between the two experiences?
Cole: I am very lucky because I have worked with so many stars. Each of them is very special, whether it is their talent, competition skills or personality characteristics, they are very different. For me, seeing curry is like seeing Duncan, their behavior and leadership. When I saw Jordan, I thought of chasing dreams. In terms of personality, they were dominant on the court.
James reminds me of Pippen, not that they are the same players, but that they always want to help their teammates and give priority to passing. I like to compare players of different times. It is incredible to see these stars playing. I have witnessed their influence on the game. I will continue to look forward to the impact of players in the new era on the game in the future.
Q: When people talk about Curry, they always say that he is one of the best teammates in history. What do you think this evaluation means to him?
Cole: Curry is proud of this status as the leader and excellent teammate of the team. But his leadership is also reflected in other aspects. Every day he walks into the training hall of Datong center, and he sets the tone for us. His love for the competition, his persistence in training, his joy to the team, and his responsibility for victory and success made Myers’ work much easier. This is curry. He is proud of both his competition and the way he handles all this.
Q: When it comes to leadership, the outside world thinks igodala is a little lost. What role does he play this season?
Cole: I don’t think so. Brother Yi has been very good this season. He helped cuminga grow a lot. Every day in training, he is leading cuminga to watch videos with him. Although the first brother didn’t play for a minute this season, it also had an impact on the game. I think first brother is like a commander, because he has rich experience in competition and high basketball IQ, which can not only guide newcomers, but also lead us forward. It is he who ensures that everything can be carried out in an orderly manner. For Warriors, brother Yi is the perfect match, and he is one of the main reasons why we get the four crowns.
When I first arrived at the Warrior, I said that brother Yi was an adult in the team. At that time, our super ability was that splash could score crazy goals, but the weakness was that they would choose crazy shots, so we needed some balance on the court. If we lose balance, we will lose control just like the wild Stadium. In this way, the risk will increase and may lead to loss. So we need the first brother to provide balance, provide basketball IQ, and remind these guys when they should take it. He knew when to feed the water flowers and when to slow down.
Q: Warriors have introduced a lot of new aid this season. For role players, how can they better adapt to the system?
Cole: First of all, we have a lot of tactics. Each match is different, but each combination must be effective. Even Curry, it will take some time to get used to the lineup this season. If you are a role player in the bench, for example, divenzenzzo, you may only make three shots in a match, but for a striker, people expect you to make it, your every shot is very important, so you need to find the balance. You can’t care about the result. The process is the key. It sounds easy, but the performance every night is evaluated by fans, coaching staff and media. Your psychology should be strong enough. It is not easy to be a role player.
Q: What do you think is the difference between the current role of coach and the previous one?
Cole: I don’t think the role itself has changed much, but the way you coach is very different. In the past, the coach was the king. If the coach wants to teach you a lesson and humiliate you, he can do so. I am very lucky that I have worked with those Hall of Fame coaches, and I have never met such coaches. Today’s coaches will be laid off if they dare to do so. This is a positive change, but there are also bad aspects. When your role changes like this, it is difficult for you to maintain your authority.
The best coaches in the past all know that there is a line you can’t cross, but you will be responsible for the players, you love them and you will take care of them. But you should be strict enough. This is my personal way of coaching. But in this era of social media, frankly speaking, you can’t be too strict with the players. Because the players are judged and criticized every day, and some of them come directly through their phone calls. I think the coach’s role now is more to appease the players and try to help the players through this difficult process. You can provide advice and guidance to players. You love them and encourage them, but you must maintain your authority.
Q: Clay said before that the brainless Black on Twitter annoyed him. You quit Twitter in the spring of 2021. Would you tell the young people this?
Cole: I talked to Wiseman two years ago. I asked him how he handled the media. He said, “it’s a little difficult.” I said, “Why don’t we just quit Twitter?”, He said, “Yes, that’s a good idea.” I am I really haven’t been on Twitter for two years. The last time I asked him, he said, “I haven’t been on either.”
So like Wiseman, we all have a consensus, and it turns out to be a good thing for us. I feel much healthier now, and I don’t know that the external evaluation of my decision makes me feel relieved. In some ways, shielding information is also a kind of happiness. Of course, there are also many great stories about social media, and Curry handled them very well. He has done a good job on personal social platforms, so it is not universal to block social media. I just remind our players that if you choose a path that makes you unhappy, then change it.
Q: Some time ago, the number of three points in dream pursuit surpassed Jordan. It was quite interesting to think about it. You have experienced basketball of different times. How do you view the evolution of the game?
Cole: today’s players, some back 25 years ago are definitely not as efficient as they are now. The game has changed too much, and now the lineup is smaller and faster. At present, there are few insiders ruling, two or three, but not many. In the past, a 7-foot man could find a job in NBA with some basketball skills. Not now. In the past, those long people had to fight against sharks, olajuwang and Ewing. Now they have to vote three points and chase their opponents downtown. The current center must be more comprehensive, fast and capable of sports, such as chasing dreams, such as Adebayor.
Q: Now the media like to ask the top five lists in history. I want you to choose from your former teammates.
Cole: Jordan, Pippen, Duncan, shark, I was a teammate of magic for several months, the last mark price.
Q: What will the library chase soup be doing 20 years later?
Cole: dream chasing will teach in NBA. After he retires, he will enter the TV station and then have a successful commentary career. Then he felt bored. He liked to compete, so he would go back to NBA to coach. Curry will play golf, Clay will travel around the world, and no one can find him.
Q: Two most representative coaching moments.
Cole: The first one is that brother Yi gets FMVP. When you make sacrifices for the team, you will get rewards as an individual. The year of the first brother’s career was the first time to play a substitute, but the finals were replaced with the first start and finally got the FMVP. Another one was the G6 rockets in the playoffs. KD was injured, either 18 or 19. Curry scored 35 points in the second half. In the fourth quarter, at the critical moment, Clay scored three points to accept the match. That is the ultimate embodiment of the Warriors team basketball. I remember that it was the library that chased the block and split the ball through the dream. I remember that everyone touched the ball in that round, in my impression, brother Yi finally shifted the ball to clay, which was the most wonderful offensive round and I will never forget it in my life.
